Professional Year Programs are promoted by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to address on-going skills shortage in Australia. They are basically a structured professional development program that combines formal learning and workplace experience. They are designed for international students who have graduated from an Australian university. Professional Year Programs run for 12 months or 44 weeks, 12 of which are allocated to the students' internship. Currently, these programs are available in the fields of accounting, computer science and engineering, where the demand for skilled and qualified graduates is high.
