Australian postcode finder

Find the postcode for any Australian suburb, or the suburbs any postcode covers. Search above, or browse by state below. Free, no account, and every result has a plain URL you can bookmark or send to someone.

How to find a postcode

  1. Type a suburb name into the search box to get its postcode.
  2. Or type a four-digit postcode to get every locality it covers.
  3. Check the state on the result. Locality names repeat heavily across Australia, so the name alone is not enough to identify a place.

What a postcode actually tells you

An Australian postcode identifies a mail delivery area, not a suburb. That single distinction explains most of the surprises: one postcode usually covers several localities, a few ignore state borders entirely, and some are not places at all.

The first digit usually indicates the state or territory, but treat it as a hint rather than a rule. The ACT also uses a small 02xx range, border towns sometimes take a neighbour's digit, and codes starting 1, 8 and 9 are PO Box and bulk-mail ranges for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane rather than places anyone lives.

Each state index lists its localities A to Z with the number of postcodes behind each letter.

Common questions

How do I find the postcode for a suburb?

Type the suburb name into the search box and the results list every matching locality with its postcode and state. It works in reverse too: enter a four-digit postcode to see every locality it covers. Always check the state, because 917 locality names in this database appear in more than one state or territory.

How many postcodes are there in Australia?

This database holds 3,310 distinct postcodes covering 16,721 entries. Of those, 2,642 are delivery-area postcodes covering 15,930 localities; the rest are 247 PO Box ranges and 421 large-volume receiver codes. Use 15,930 for a count of suburbs and localities.

Can one postcode cover more than one suburb?

Yes, and most do. 2,015 of the 2,642 delivery-area postcodes cover more than one locality and only 627 cover exactly one. The widest is 4871 in far north Queensland, which covers 103 localities.

Can an Australian postcode cross a state border?

Yes. Fourteen postcodes appear in more than one state or territory. Postcode 0872 is the clearest example, covering 81 remote localities across the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. Deriving a state from a postcode alone is wrong for these.

Is the postcode finder free?

Yes. Searching postcodes and localities is free and needs no account, and every result has a plain URL you can bookmark or share.
